Installation - Help With Playing

INSTALLATION

This zip archive contains the Future Boy! demo, installable on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, BeOS, and Palm OS and Pocket PC based handheld devices.

The demo game has two main components: (1) the game file "future.hex", and (2) an application called the Hugo Engine, a version of which is provided for each target platform and which is used to load and run the game file.

After unzipping this archive, you'll have a "Future Boy! demo" folder (assuming you've chosen to use pathnames provided by the zip archive). Inside that folder, the game file "future.hex" can be found in the "game" folder.

Instructions for installing and running the game on each of the various platforms are as follows:

Windows (95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP)

Double-click on the "Future Boy! demo (Windows)" application icon in the "Future Boy! demo" folder. The game should start automatically.

Macintosh (OS 9 or OS X)

Unstuff the file "hugov31_macos.sit" in the "mac" folder. (Probably just by double-clicking it; if you don't already have StuffIt Expander, you can download it from http://www.stuffit.com.)

Double-click the "Hugo Engine" icon that you've unstuffed, and open the game file "future.hex" from the "game" folder. (You can also drop "future.hex" on the "(Drop untyped .hex files here)" icon so that you can open the game file directly by double-clicking it.)

Linux (X11 with wxGTK)

Unpack the archive "hugov31_wxwin_linux.tar.gz" in the "linux/bin" directory. (Note that the Hugo Engine for Linux/X11/wxGTK requires the wxGTK and MikMod libraries to be installed; the source for these is available at the time of this writing from http://www.wxwindows.org and http://mikmod.raphnet.net/, respectively.

Run the program "hewx" and open the game file "future.hex" from the "game" folder.

BeOS (R5, x86 or PPC)

Unzip either "hugov31_beosx86.zip" or "hugov31_beosppc.zip", for either x86 or PowerPC-based BeOS systems, in the "beos" folder". (Double-clicking the file should open it with Expander.) Start the game by running the "BeHugo" application, or by double-clicking "future.hex" in the "game" folder.

Palm (PalmOS 3.5 and higher)

Upload the files "future.pdb" and "palmhugo.prc" to your Palm handheld device. Start the program "Hugo" and select "Future Boy!" from the games list.

Windows CE/Pocket PC (2000 or later)

Run Setup.exe in the Pocket PC folder to install PocketHugo on your device. (Non-Windows users should manually transfer the appropriate .CAB file for the device's processor type (ARM/MIPS/SH3) to the device and open it using File Explorer.) Then, transfer the file "future.hex" from the "game" folder to the device's Documents folder. Launch PocketHugo and select "Future Boy!" from the games list.

Others

If your system is not one of the above-listed supported platforms, you can try downloading the Hugo Engine (version 3.1 or later) for your computer from http://www.generalcoffee.com/hugo/, if a version is available, and use it to run the game file "future.hex".

Please note that running Future Boy! on a non-supported system is not guaranteed to work properly, if at all, and is not recommended or supported by The General Coffee Company Film Productions.
